Every month from July 2023 onwards (except July 2024) exceeded 1.5\u00b0C above pre-industrial averages.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iasgyan.in\/daily-current-affairs\/what-breaching-15c-means\"><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does This Mean Paris Agreement Has Failed?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Not technically &#8211; but the window is rapidly closing<\/strong>. The Paris Agreement&#8217;s 1.5\u00b0C target refers to&nbsp;<strong>long-term averages over decades, not single years<\/strong>. Current long-term average warming is estimated at 1.34\u00b0C to 1.41\u00b0C depending on measurement methodology.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/wmo-confirms-2024-warmest-year-record-about-155degc-above-pre-industrial-level\"><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>However, WMO forecasts an 86% chance that at least one year between 2025-2029 will exceed 1.5\u00b0C, and 70% probability that the five-year average will breach this threshold<\/strong>. Recent climate modeling suggests we may have already entered the 20-year period where average temperatures permanently exceed 1.5\u00b0C. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/05\/1163751\">news.un<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/05\/1163751\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Every fraction of a degree of warming matters,&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;emphasized WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo.&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;Whether it is below or above 1.5\u00b0C, every additional increment increases impacts on our lives, economies and planet.&#8221;<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/world\/climate-change\/earth-records-hottest-year-ever-in-2024-breached-a-key-threshold-9770781\/\"><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-vicious-cycle-when-carbon-sinks-become-carbon\">The Vicious Cycle: When Carbon Sinks Become Carbon Sources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.aquartia.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-158.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.aquartia.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-158.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.aquartia.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-158-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.aquartia.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-158-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blog.aquartia.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-158-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the most alarming finding in the WMO bulletin is the&nbsp;<strong>weakening capacity of Earth&#8217;s natural carbon &#8220;sinks&#8221; to absorb CO\u2082 from the atmosphere<\/strong>.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/carbon-dioxide-levels-increase-record-amount-new-highs-2024\"><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Normally, terrestrial ecosystems (forests, soils) and oceans absorb approximately half of anthropogenic CO\u2082 emissions<\/strong>. But 2024&#8217;s El Ni\u00f1o conditions created a triple threat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Forest Carbon Absorption Collapse<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tropical forest loss in 2024 was double that of 2023<\/strong>. Ocean Warming Effects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Warmer ocean waters absorb less CO\u2082<\/strong>&nbsp;due to reduced solubility. Surface ocean warming also strengthens stratification, limiting vertical mixing that brings nutrients to support carbon-absorbing phytoplankton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Wildfire Emission Surge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2024&#8217;s record heat fueled catastrophic wildfires globally<\/strong>, not only destroying carbon-storing vegetation but directly emitting stored carbon back into the atmosphere. The bulletin cited wildfires as a major contributor alongside fossil fuel emissions.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/carbon-dioxide-levels-increase-record-amount-new-highs-2024\"><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;This threatens to be a vicious climate cycle,&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;the WMO warned. Reduced carbon sink capacity \u2192 higher atmospheric CO\u2082 \u2192 more warming \u2192 further sink degradation \u2192 even higher CO\u2082.
